The Pool Hall

Alas, the old Ashley Avenue Pool Hall in downtown Charleston has been closed down for years. This is how I remembered it when I was a kid, passing on my walk to school.

Petroglyph National Monument

5.5"x8" sketchbook, Ink and Watercolor

This is a view looking up Boca Negra Canyon at the Petroglyph National Monument, near Albuquerque, NM. The canyon was formed by nearby volcanoes that erupted 130,000 years ago. The sheet of lava hardened and eventually was undermined by erosion and eventually broke into these rocks and tumbled down the escarpment. Later, ancient native people pecked images onto many of the rocks, called petroglyphs. There are more than 25,000 cultural images that are still visible. These images possess deep spiritual significance for today's Pueblo Indians and other native peoples. I managed to climb up the trail to near the top of this canyon, but I had a time trying to climb back down!
